- Arsenal Futbol Club is installing a large battery system that will power the stadium on match days
- Aresnal will buy renewable energy from a supplier when is it cheap and store it
- Excess stored energy will be sold during peak times
- The large battery will help stabilize grid frequency
I thought that this was pretty interesting considering the fact that Arsenal is such a large club. They have a huge following and influence in the soccer world. Arsenal taking large steps to be more environmentally responsible could create waves in the soccer stadium world. The article talks about how the transition to all sustainable energy is going to save Arsenal money as well as lessen their carbon footprint. Arsenal will also be helping to stabilize the grid during peak use hours which helps North London as well as makes Arsenal money.
I think there is potential for Arsenal to take the lead on sustainability in the arena sector. I hope that other clubs and stadiums see the potential, success and viability of the renewable energy storage model and seek to follow suit. I am also hopeful that Arsenal will expand to other areas of sustainability. The club seems to be okay with breaking the mold with innovation so I believe they should continue to do so. Perhaps Arsenal could venture into a zero waste stadium or transition away from single use plastics inside their walls. Renewable energy storage is a great place to start but there are lots of other areas where improvement can be made.
