- the boat named Holy Turtle was launched in Honduras last week
- the Holy Turtle can clean up 20 tons go plastic per trip
- the boats design is not patented because SodaStream views it as a public service that people should replicate
- due to its coastal location and tidal patterns Honduras often sees mile long plastic "islands"
I found this article very interesting. I did not know very much about SodaStream besides they made it simple to make carbonated beverages at home. I had never really considered that they were trying to make sustainable leaps in other areas. The article talked a lot about how the company is invested in the idea that the company is responsible for their product through its full lifecycle. This is one reason why SodaStream wants to make an example of trying to clean up some of the plastic that is in the ocean. There is too much for one company to clean up especially considering there is a trash island that is three times the size of Spain. However, SodaStream wants to use their Holy Turtle boat as an example for what can be done as well as to bring awareness to the issue of plastics in our oceans. I think it is very cool that the company is being very active in bringing awareness to the issue as well as actively searching for new answers.
SodaStream did not patent the technology used in the Holy Turtle. The company believes that the technology is a public service and that others should be able to access it as to use or improve it. I think this is really cool and ties into the idea of experimental collaboration as discussed in chapter 6 of the Green Giants book. SodaStream wants other people to be able to access and improve their technology fo the betterment of the world as a whole. I think there is potential in this technology however it was not clear how the boat is run and what other resources are sacrificed in the use of this boat. I also wonder what the potential effectiveness of this technology would be in making a dent in the global plastic ocean crisis.
