The product I chose to check out was my face wash. I chose it because I use it twice a day and it is being put directly onto my face. I use the Alba Hawaiian Facial Cleanser in the pineapple scent.
The ingredients list is as follows Aqua (Water), Jojoba Esters, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil (1), Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice (1), Ananas Sativus (Pineapple) Fruit Extract, Carica Papaya (Papaya) Fruit Extract (1), Zingiber Officinale (Ginger) Root Extract (1), Tocopheryl Acetate, Allantoin, Bromelain, Carbomer, Cetyl Alcohol, Citric Acid, Glycerin, Potassium Hydroxide, Sodium Riboflavin Phosphate, Stearic Acid, Alcohol (1)Certified Organic Ingredients.
I used the EWG's Skin Deep Cosmetic Data base to see how toxic this product was. The score it received overall was a 5. This score meant that it is a moderate hazard.
The ingredients with the highest scores (meaning more toxic) were fragrance, benzyl benzoate and limonene. I decided to look into limonene to see what this ingredient does. I found out that limonene is a scent component that comes from citrus fruit. When I searched limonene on the CDC website I found out that it is flammable and can cause irritation of the skin and eyes. The research on whether limonene was limited but suggested that there were consequences in health when administered in high doses. There weren't any scary side effects such as cancer however, the score is still not good and I know there are better products out there.
After seeing the results of this facial cleanser I decided to see what the scores of the brands that I had used in the past were. I found that other cleansers I had used had lower scores and were overall less hazardous. Once I have finished up this bottle I am going to go back to a cleanser with a lower score. I honestly thought that I was using natural products on my body but I was surprised with the results. I am also going to use this database in the future to see what I am using on my body.
